Kerala Backwaters: The Complete Travel Guide for 2026

There are few places on earth quite like the Kerala backwaters. A 900-kilometre network of lakes, canals, rivers, and lagoons running parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, the backwaters are the soul of God's Own Country. Gliding through them on a traditional kettuvallam (houseboat) as the sun sets over the paddy fields is an experience that stays with you forever.

At Golden Leaf Project LLP, we have been crafting backwater experiences for travellers from across India and the world since 2013. Here is everything you need to know to plan the perfect backwater trip.

The Best Backwater Destinations

Alleppey (Alappuzha) — The Backwater Capital

Alleppey is the most famous backwater destination and for good reason. The town itself is charming, with canals running through it, and the surrounding backwaters are spectacular. The Vembanad Lake — India's longest lake — is the centrepiece.

Best for: First-time visitors, houseboat stays, the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race (August).

Kumarakom — Serene and Upscale

On the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom is quieter and more upscale than Alleppey. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a highlight — a paradise for birdwatchers, especially from November to February when migratory birds arrive.

Best for: Birdwatching, luxury resort stays, peaceful getaways.

Kollam — The Undiscovered Gem

Kollam (Quilon) is where the backwaters begin, and it sees far fewer tourists than Alleppey. The Ashtamudi Lake here is stunning — a vast, palm-fringed expanse with eight arms spreading into the surrounding landscape.

Best for: Travellers who want the backwater experience without the crowds.

Kasaragod — The Northern Backwaters

The backwaters of Kasaragod in northern Kerala are almost entirely off the tourist trail. The Kappil Lake and Bekal Fort area offer a completely different, more raw backwater experience.

Best for: Off-the-beaten-path explorers.

Houseboat Tips: What You Need to Know

Types of Houseboats

  • Standard houseboats: 1-3 bedrooms, basic amenities, most affordable
  • Premium houseboats: Air-conditioned bedrooms, better kitchen, more space
  • Luxury houseboats: Top-end finishes, private deck, chef on board

What's Typically Included

Most houseboat packages include accommodation, all meals (Kerala cuisine — fresh fish, rice, curries), a crew (captain and cook), and fuel. Always confirm what is included before booking.

Overnight vs Day Cruise

An overnight stay is highly recommended. Watching the sun set over the backwaters, dining under the stars, and waking up to the morning mist on the water are experiences a day cruise cannot replicate.

Best Time to Book

Book at least 2-3 months in advance for peak season (October to March). Last-minute bookings are possible in the off-season but availability is limited for good houseboats.

The Best Time to Visit

October to February is the ideal season — cool, dry weather, clear skies, and the backwaters at their most beautiful. This is also when the Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place (second Saturday of August).

March to May is hot but manageable. Fewer tourists mean better prices and more availability.

June to September is monsoon season. The backwaters are lush and dramatic, and prices drop significantly. Some houseboats do not operate during heavy monsoon. Not recommended for first-time visitors.

Beyond the Backwaters: What Else to See

A Kerala trip should not be only backwaters. Combine your backwater experience with:

  • Munnar — Tea gardens, misty hills, and cool air (3-4 hours from Alleppey)
  • Thekkady — Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, spice plantations
  • Kovalam/Varkala — Beautiful beaches
  • Thrissur — Cultural capital of Kerala, home to the famous Thrissur Pooram festival

Practical Tips

  • Carry cash: Many houseboat operators and local shops do not accept cards
  • Pack light: Houseboats have limited storage
  • Bring insect repellent: Essential for evenings on the water
  • Respect the environment: Do not throw waste into the water
  • Try the food: Kerala cuisine on a houseboat — fresh fish, karimeen (pearl spot), prawn curry — is unforgettable
